Moslavina is a well-known wine-growing region. The vineyards here were planted by the Thracians, Illyrians and Celts. During the Roman times, when Moslavina was being intensely populated, a new wave of planting vines began, especially during the reign of the emperor Claudius. To this day it is believed that the name Moslavina is a version of the Roman name MonsClaudius. The wines of this region were known in Vienna and Zagreb as early as the middle of 19th century. The development of modern viticulture was marked by the Croatian wine cooperative founded in Voloder in 1913. Today Moslavina winemaking is based on the private initiative of many small and a few larger winemakers.
Moslavina is the home of indigenous wine sorts, Škrlet being one of the most prominent ones. Škrlet is the first variety that has received the recognition of the Croatian Centre for Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs for three clones of Škrlet, which made Škrlet the first branded Croatian variety, which further emphasized the hard work of winemakers who excel in innovation.
Wine roads between Popovača and Kutina offer wine tastings in numerous cellars where one can also buy the wine in bottles or directly from the barrel. Besides enjoying the wines, the proud owners offer local gastronomic specialties, as well as accommodation in rural households or family farms.
Kutina as the largest town in wine-growing Moslavina has had its own Wine Court since 2002. Wine Court was designed as a central and initial place of Kutina and Moslavina wine and gastronomy offer. It is a place where all social activities related to wine take place, from tastings and lectures to wine exhibitions, organized by Lujo Miklaužić Wine and Fruit Growers’ Association from Kutina.
A visit to wine roads of Moslavina offers a unique experience and will definitely be remembered by everyone who visits this wine-growing area embraced by Lonjsko Polje and wine-growing hills.
